Gray Whale Sighting
Journey to the Heart of Their Migration (January to March)
Service Description
Embark on a unique journey to the Magdalena Bay Natural Sanctuary, where gray whales undertake one of the most impressive migrations in the animal kingdom. Every year, these marine giants travel between 15,000 and 20,000 kilometers from the Arctic waters to the coast of Baja California Sur, Mexico, to reproduce and give birth in the region's tranquil lagoons. During the trip, it's possible to spot other marine species, such as dolphins, which accompany the whales for parts of their journey. The best time for this encounter is February, when the whale population is at its peak. The gray whale is the only species in the Eschrichtiidae family and is characterized by feeding on the seabed, where it consumes small crustaceans and other invertebrates. This particular diet exposes it to a greater number of parasites, such as barnacle geckos, which attach to its skin. Interestingly, gray whales often approach boats to allow cleaner fish to remove these parasites, offering observers a unique and close-up experience. It is important to note that the gray whale population has faced challenges in recent decades. Although the population was estimated at around 27,000 individuals in 2016, recent studies indicate a significant decline, with current figures hovering around 13,000. This decline is mainly attributed to a lack of food in their Arctic feeding grounds due to climate change and the reduction of sea ice, which affects their ability to accumulate the energy necessary for migration and reproduction. Your certified guide will share fascinating information about gray whale behavior, their migratory history, and the conservation efforts needed to protect this iconic species. Upon returning to Puerto Chale, we will enjoy lunch at a local restaurant, featuring typical regional flavors, before returning to La Paz. Total duration: 7-8 hours Price: $2900 MXN per person (Minimum 3 people, up to 10 people) Includes round-trip transportation from La Paz, boat tour, certified guide, lunch at a local restaurant, drinks, and snacks.
